U.S. launching program focusing on natural gas-powered cars

Detroit News -- President Barack Obama said gas prices will "probably keep going up" as worldwide demand for cars and oil continues to rise.

At a speech at the University of Miami, Obama also announced a small $30 million Energy Department research grant to boost the number of vehicles running on natural gas — and he touted the government's new fuel standards that will nearly double the efficiency of cars and trucks by 2025.

"We're launching a program that will bring together the nation's best scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to figure out how more cars can be powered by natural gas — a fuel that's cleaner, cheaper and more abundant than oil," Obama said.

Currently, only Honda Motor Co. sells a compressed natural gas passenger car in the United States — the Honda Civic GX. Chrysler has said it p

NG will go up just like oil as soon as the demand is increasing. And then it might be even more expensive than petroleum based "gas."

U.S. launching program focusing on natural gas-powered cars and they should. Natural gas is so plentiful that its almost not profitable to frack out f the ground. Create a demand for more natural gas as fuel for vehicles and not using oil to do it..
With Big oil selling fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. Barry will support natural gas and oil production for sale on the world market to pay for his ‘spending gone wild’ addiction. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their benefit.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle is, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using ‘other’ forms of transportation to help lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Nice article. I saw on the news last night that AT&T converted their fleet of vehicles. Of course they have pumps right there at the company. I've never seen these pumps anywhere I've been.

CNG will not work for the average driver as there is no fueling infrastructure. It should be great for taxicabs, delivery vehicles and the like that travel in a limited area and can refuel at their home base or at a very limited number of locations.

While its a wonderful idea, it's only being brought up because gas is so high now and there are not enough fueling stations for these

That is like this unexecutive cutting the budget. It is so small it will not achieve anything. Hope about putting the subsidies going to bo into this? bo makes more profit in one quarter than the subsidies so they really, really do not need nor deserve!

Conversions to NG have been done around here for years for delivery vehicles, the problem is refilling your tank when you travel.

I worry about people who don't know a thing about mechanics, science or technology coming up with new standards that they don't understand. They need to back off the regulations and give the engineers a little breathing room.

The more demand for natural gas will only drive the price of it up.

It is not world wide demand driving prices up but speculators.
